The Everlasting King

by Bob Hostetler

The Lord is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king (Jeremiah 10:10, KJV).

Not long ago, I tackled the enormous task of cleaning our basement. It was cluttered with the accumulation of years. As I sorted through one stack, I found a news magazine not quite thirty years old.

Thumbing through the pages, I was struck by the faces of that era's leaders. Richard Nixon was president of the United States of America. The shah ruled in Iran. Idi Amin controlled Uganda. Golda Meir was prime minister of Israel. Anwar Sadat and Georges Pompidou were presidents of Egypt and France, respectively.

Today, those leaders are all gone. The passing from influence--and from life--of these men and women who wielded such power less than thirty years ago shows how fleeting earthly power is.

But Jeremiah declares confidently that God is a different kind of leader. "The Lord," he says, "is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king." The leaders who walk the halls of power come and go, but God, who dwells in the timeless corridors of eternity, is "an everlasting king" who does not change, whose power does not waver, and whose kingdom will not end.

Prayer: I praise you, Lord, your your everlasting power. You rule the earth; rule in my heart today. Amen.
