The Sound of His Voiceby Bob Hostetler"The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is majestic" (Psalm 29:4, NIV). You may know him as the deep voice that intones, "This is CNN!" Or you may remember him from the ominous tones of Darth Vader in the Star Wars sagas. Or you may associate him with the voice of King Mufasa in Disney's animated feature, The Lion King.Chances are, you've heard the deep, resonant voice of James Earl Jones somewhere. But nothing compares to the voice of the Lord, which is the subject of Psalm 29. Seven times in this psalm, the "voice of the Lord" thunders, which is why some commentators call this Hebrew hymn "The Psalm of the Seven Thunders." At the voice of the Lord, rain pours in torrents, thunders roll, the sturdiest trees are broken, the loftiest mountains shake violently, the wilderness trembles, forked lightning divides the sky, and dense forests are stripped bare. And yet--and yet--as verse 11 states, this powerful, majestic, thundering voice speaks soothingly to his children, and "blesses his people with peace." The voice of our God, who sits enthroned as King forever, may make mountains tremble and quake, but he can also speak comfort and peace, solace and strength to your heart today. Prayer: Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening; speak your will and word to my heart today. More devotions by Bob Hostetler... Copyright © 2005, Bob Hostetler |
