Book ReviewsA Gritty, Rewarding Read
For years, now, I've planned my reading each
year to try to achieve a well-rounded, challenging mix of books in my
reading experience. For some time, I've made it my goal to try one
"multicultural or international" book in my reading plans.
I've tried Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Bharati Mukherjee, and
others, but hadn't yet found a compelling or enjoyable read among them (in
fact, I asked a good friend who is a teacher of literature to recommend
something, and her response was, "Good luck"). But my friend Karen Montani recommended
Khaled Hosseini's "The
Kite Runner" to me, explaining that while some parts were definitely,
er, gritty, the book was well worth
reading. She was right. Hosseini's story of an Afghani boy was the best novel
I've read this year. |
